Heavy rains lash Karnataka coast, woman killed in landslide

Heavy rains in coastal areas of Karnataka : Heavy rains continued on Friday in the coastal district of Dakshina Kannada in Karnataka, affecting normal life in different parts and disrupting vehicular movement, while a woman was killed in a landslide.

A woman was killed when a portion of a hillock collapsed on her house due to heavy rains at Nandwara in Sajipamunnur village in Bantwal taluk of Dakshina Kannada district in the early hours of Friday, police said. He said that the woman was identified as Zarina (47), wife of one Mohd. Earlier, his daughter Safa (20) was rescued from the debris by fire and rescue department personnel and the police.

Sources said Zarina’s body could be retrieved from the debris after a long time, while Safa was admitted to the hospital. Safa told that due to heavy rains there has been devastation in the area. Police officers and personnel of the taluk administration along with Tehsildar SB Koodalgi reached the spot to supervise the rescue operations.

District Disaster Management Authority sources said 53 rain-affected people have been shifted to safer places and two relief camps have been opened in Mulki taluk and one each in Mangaluru and Bantwal taluks. Sources also said that vehicular movement was blocked on the Puttur-Panaje road in the district after a bridge at Chelyadka was completely submerged on Thursday.

According to sources, the Kumaradhara river at Kukke Subramaniam is almost in spate and the bathing ghat near the temple is almost submerged. Reports received from different parts of the district said that 29 houses have been damaged due to heavy rains in the last two days.

Sources said that electric poles and lines have also been destroyed at various places. The Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for Friday and orange alert for Saturday for the coastal areas of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada. Meanwhile, the district administrations of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi declared holidays for educational institutions on Friday.
