The way US President Joe Biden feted his Indian counterpart, Narendra Modi, during his recent meeting, highlighted that the arguments that the US uses to demonize some nations do not work for others. The differences between the US and China have led to a closer relationship between Washington and New Delhi, whose bond has strengthened in matters such as defense, technology and trade. From the White House they have defined their friendship as “deep and close”, and as an association with “warm family ties”. This way of describing their mutual attachment has weighed so heavily that the human rights abuses that take place in the most populous country in the world have been totally eclipsed by this convenient geostrategic romance.
